How Dark Nights: Death Metal Reboots the DC Universe

The end of Dark Nights: Death Metal #7 is the last stop of more than a decade of Scott Snyder driving the DC metaverse’s bus. The conclusion to the Dark Nights saga, which started in 2017 with Dark Nights: Metal and ran through an entire Justice League series before concluding here, closes off storylines Snyder and his creative partner Greg Capullo seeded as far back as their first issue of Batman when the New 52 launched. And with Infinite Frontier and Future State, DC’s next publishing initiatives, on deck, it’s worth taking a look at what Death Metal did so…

The Incredible Hulk’s Diminished Legacy in the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Love it or hate it, one of the things that makes the Marvel Cinematic Universe work is the long term synergy. With Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, over a decade of movies came together to pull off one of the most entertaining spectacles of our time. It’s a universe that, for the most part, feels consistent and it builds on itself as each movie feels like an essential cog in a larger machine. Some cogs are bigger than the others, though, and when it comes to “the others,” one can’t help but notice that 2008’s Incredible Hulk is something…

The Other History of the DC Universe Tells a Different Black Lightning Story Than You’d Expect

The Other History of the DC Universe, John Ridley and Giuseppe Cammuncoli’s new prestige miniseries from DC’s Black Label, has a particularly evocative title. When you hear that name, you think Howard Zinn, something like A People’s Crisis on Infinite Earths. It implies a grand, broad look at the sweep of DC Universe history from the perspective of marginalized people, voices who were not the ones telling the story (in and outside of it). But the book that is out this week is…not quite that. Ridley was “less interested in putting obelisks on the timeline,” he said at a roundtable…

Werner Herzog On Unlocking the Secrets of the Universe…from Earth

There may be nothing more pleasing than watching a room full of scientists erupt in glee as the probe they spent hurtling into space years prior finally touches down on a moving object in the farthest reaches of space. The information and material that the probe will send back can hopefully answer questions of the universe we’ve been trying to ask since the beginning of our existence. Since before humans even walked the earth, however, the dark blanket of the sky has been depositing meteors to our world that hold important answers of the unknown. The new Apple TV+ documentary…

The Power Rangers “Reboot Universe” Is Exactly What The Franchise Needs

In the early 1990s Mighty Morphin Power Rangers burst onto the scene and quickly became one of the hottest kids shows on the planet. Millions of toys were sold, ratings went through the roof, multiple copycats were created, and a big budget movie was put into production. Power Rangers’ place in pop culture was cemented and secured a long future for the franchise. However, as the years went on and Power Rangers continued on television its fame slowly evaporated. Darkwing Duck and the Slow Building of the Disney Afternoon Universe

This DuckTales article contains spoilers for the recent Darkwing Duck special. The people behind the new DuckTales are massive fans of Darkwing Dark. You can’t deny it after the recent big “crossover” episode aired on Disney, which finally brought Darkwing and his extended cast fully into the story of DuckTales. It featured a deeply compelling story about Darkwing, Gosalyn, and Launchpad, furthered DuckTales‘ current story arc, AND tons of references, big and small, to Darkwing and the Disney Afternoon. Putting together an episode like that is not easy so we had to sit down with DuckTales Co-Executive Producer Frank Angones…

Looking to The Future of the DC Universe

The beauty of telling stories in a multiverse is the infinite possibility offered by the infinite places and infinite times to set those stories in. DC’s embrace of their multiverse has historically been one of its strongest features, but Crisis on Infinite Earths muted that ability for decades after, and only recently have comics creators started to enthusiastically dive into the concept again. And with Dark Nights: Death Metal wailing towards its conclusion, it looks like DC is set to go head first into the Bleed again. Future State is the next big DC Comics event. Following the conclusion of…

Dark Nights: Death Metal Resurrects the Entire DC Universe

Scott Snyder and James Tynion IV had a chance to chat up their big current projects as part of Metaverse, this year’s pandemic margarine to New York Comic Con’s butter, and there were some surprising reveals to be had. Most surprising? Snyder spoiled the ending of Dark Nights: Death Metal. Sort of. Death Metal is many things. It is primarily the capstone to Snyder’s decade driving the DC line, first as writer of New 52 Batman with Greg Capullo, then on All-Star Batman and the Dark Nights: Metal/Justice League/Death Metal Crisis triptych. It’s the culmination of his partnership with Capullo,…

Robert Downey Jr. Wants to Build a Sherlock Holmes Universe Like the MCU

You don’t come out of working in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for a decade without high aspirations and some good ideas—nor without the resources and star power to potentially make them happen. This is the case for Robert Downey Jr. who, after helping Marvel to launch the MCU and working as a key part of the ever-growing franchise for almost 10 years, wants to use what he’s learned to grow another franchise: Sherlock Holmes. “At this point, we really feel that there is not a mystery-verse built out anywhere, and Conan Doyle is the definitive voice in that arena, I…

How The Walking Dead: World Beyond Expands the Zombie Universe with Its Unique Teen Characters

After its premiere was delayed by several months due to COVID-19, the two-season The Walking Dead spinoff series The Walking Dead: World Beyond finally makes its debut this week. The story expands the TWD universe in a unique way, taking place 10 years after the zombie outbreak and focusing on a predominantly teenage cast of characters. Unlike the battered groups of survivors from The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead, these teens have been sheltered from walkers (or “empties,” as they’re called on this show) within the walls of a university in Omaha, Nebraska, a thriving colony that has…

DC Universe Not Shutting Down! Becomes DC Universe Infinite

DC’s streaming comics, movie and TV show streaming service is evolving in January. The app currently known as DC Universe will be changing to DC Universe Infinite, a comic book-focused streaming service. The plan is for the updated streaming service to have 24,000 comics available at launch, a roughly 10% increase on the current library. Comics and original graphic novels will be available through DCU Infinite within six months of publication, much faster than the current one year lag time. And DC’s successful digital-first series like Injustice: Year Zero and Batman: Gotham Knights will be available sooner. There’s also a…

Kang the Conqueror: What the New Villain Means for the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Jonathan Majors has reportedly been cast as Kang the Conqueror and will make his debut in Ant-Man 3. Considering that Kang is a time traveler, it’s probably to let Paul Rudd know how many decades he has left until he starts showing signs of aging. Other than the fact that Peyton Reed will return to direct, there aren’t many official Ant-Man 3 details yet (it doesn’t even have a release date at the moment), so we don’t know how major Kang’s appearance in this film will be. Is he the full-on villain of the movie? Is he a glorified cameo…

Is New Mutants an Ending for the Fox X-Men Universe?

Ever since the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I’ve been absolutely fascinated by any and all attempts for studios to create and navigate an expanded universe. Whether it’s based on superheroes or the supernatural, we’ve seen more Goofuses than Galants. Whatever your opinion of the Marvel movies, you have to at least admit that it worked out fantastically for Disney. They figured out a formula and it was a success. Meanwhile, Amazing Spider-Man 2 got rewritten into oblivion, failed, and Sony buried their expansion plans until Venom became a surprise hit. Warner Bros. and DC rushed into their own…
