Dear Evan Hansen: Internet Reacts to Hollywood Treatment

Universal Pictures just released the first trailer for its movie adaptation of Tony-winning musical Dear Evan Hansen, and the internet is having a field day over the casting of 27-year-old Ben Platt in the title role of teenager Evan Hansen. Platt, who won a Tony for his performance in the stage musical that features music and lyrics from La La Land‘s Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, played the role on stage for two years on and off, from the original “readings” of the work-in-progress musical back in 2014 through the D.C. workshop run in 2015 to Dear Evan Hansen‘s Off-Broadway and then…

Link Tank: The Scarlet Witch’s Treatment in WandaVision vs. Marvel Comics

Disney+’s WandaVision was kinder to Wanda Maximoff than most of Marvel Comics have been to the Scarlet Witch in recent decades. “Despite Wanda Maximoff’s fifty-seven year history with Marvel, comics haven’t been exceptionally kind to the Scarlet Witch, which made WandaVision’s deep exploration of her grief a breath of fresh air. Some of its issues come from the structure of the film, which shoehorns very real queer struggles into wacky rom-com tropes too fluffy to contain the stakes at hand. Meanwhile the choice to have one half of the lead couple be so aggressively and repeatedly cruel—while her high school ex…

James Comey Gets the Hero Treatment in New Showtime Series Trailer

We have our first look at Jeff Daniels as James Comey and Brendan Gleeson as Donald Trump in The Comey Rule. And to be honest, it appears eerie in more than one way. The new two-part miniseries event hails from Showtime and creator Billy Ray, who among other credits wrote Captain Phillips and the adapted screenplay to the first Hunger Games movie. So the true story aspirations of the former and dystopian vision of reality television stars in the latter appear to merge in this visibly stirring image of James Comey, the all-American hero on screen. The series will be…
