New on Amazon Prime Video UK November 2020

December’s really what we’re hanging on for, Amazon Prime Video-wise. That’s when the new 10-episode season of The Expanse lands. November though, does have a couple of likely streaming candidates in the form of dark comedy Wayne, which, with its teen-road-trip and nihilist violence vibe, sounds like just the thing for a fan of Channel 4’s excellent The End of the F***ing World. There’s also the fifth and final season of Syfy’s The Magicians, plus new Alan Ball film Uncle Frank, starring Paul Bettany, which had a warm reception at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. As the sneak-release of Borat…

Coming 2 America to Stream on Amazon Prime Video Per Paramount Deal

Coming 2 America is set to sow its royal oats on Amazon Prime Video. Paramount has sold the distribution rights to the film, a sequel to star Eddie Murphy’s 1988 signature comedy hit, Coming to America, to Amazon Studios for around $125 million, as sources tell Variety. With the deal reportedly locked, the film is now expected to premiere on the retail giant’s streaming platform, Amazon Prime Video, on December 18. The move, of course, is a response to the stagnant state of a pandemic-era global box office. Indeed, the sequel was originally slated to hit theaters on August 7,…

Borat 2 Trailer and Release Date on Amazon Prime Confirmed

Borat 2: Subsequent Moviefilm is coming to Amazon Prime Video on Friday, October 23rd, and a first proper trailer for Sacha Baron Cohen’s hurriedly-filmed project attempts to give us an idea of what we’re in for, but …we probably still aren’t ready for what we’re about to get. The existence of a sequel to Baron Cohen’s 2006 comedy vehicle Borat! Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan was officially confirmed in late September after being produced in relative secret, and was first announced as Borat! Gift of Pornographic Monkey to Vice Premiere Mikhael Pence to Make…

October is here and you know what that means: time for the streaming services to put their spookiest foot forward. Amazon is doing its part for its new releases in October 2020 by rolling out some horror originals and library titles. This is the month that the much-hyped Blumhouse horror anthology series Welcome to the Blumhouse arrives. “Episodes” of that, Black Box and The Lie launch on Oct. 6 and Evil Eye and Nocturne arrive on Oct. 13. Another horror-adjacent release of note is Truth Seekers, a comedy-horror series from Nick Frost and Simon Pegg. That’s about it for notable…

Greenland Skips Theaters, Lands Amazon Prime Release Date

It looks like another one-time theatrical release is going to skip theaters altogether after moving out of its initial release date. Buried deep inside a long list of new releases coming out via Amazon Prime Video in October is Greenland, the Gerard Butler vehicle in which the star must try to save his family from a comet hurtling toward the Earth. Originally slated to come out in theaters last Friday (September 25), Greenland was yanked from the schedule literally as the movie’s press junket was underway with a new release date to be determined. Well, now we have it: Greenland…

Amazon Prime Video UK: What’s New in August 2020?

August will be a quiet month on Prime Video UK leading up to the arrival of The Boys season 2 in the first week of September, but there are still a few things to look forward to before Billy Butcher and co. get back to ridding the world of megalomaniacal superheroes and their enablers. Towards the end of August on Prime, Stargirl will be streaming for UK viewers. The DC Universe show has received strong reviews and will be back for a second season eventually. If you’re already a fan of DC’s Doom Patrol, it will make for a sweeter…

Amazon Prime Video New Releases: August 2020

There are slow months for streaming services and then there are “choose a decade-old Chris Nolan movie as a header image” slow months for streaming services. Amazon Prime’s August 2020 clearly falls into the latter camp. That’s not to say that there aren’t some interesting options arriving this month. August 1 has a few intriguing movies including Four Weddings and a Funeral, Inception, Rain Man, and even Spider-Man 3. But there aren’t many Amazon originals to speak of. Chemical Hearts, starring Lili Reinhart (Riverdale) premieres on August 20. Then on August 28, subscribers can get a sneak peek at Amazon’s…

How Star Trek Beyond Redefined the Prime Timeline

Four years ago, the Star Trek universe looked very, very different. At that time, there hadn’t been a new Star Trek series in five years, and the idea of three new seasons of different shows coming out in one year (as in 2020) would have seemed absurd. Way back in 2016, the year the franchise celebrated its 50th anniversary, there was only one new (filmed) Star Trek story released into the world: the movie Star Trek Beyond.  Contrast this with the 25th Anniversary of Star Trek in the year 1991: Spock crossed over to The Next Generation in the season…

Amazon Prime Video UK: What’s New in July 2020?

A new month means a new crop of streaming offerings on Prime Video UK, and July’s highlights include a second season of Amazon Original Hanna and the complete series of Mad Men to keep you busy. Newer library films include Knives Out starring Daniel Craig and his magnificently over the top accent, Countdown (that horror movie about the app that kills you in three days), Roland Emmerich’s Midway and coming of age comedy How to Build a Girl. Elsewhere on Prime Video channels, STARZPLAY has a monopoly with The Great Season 1, Ramy Season 2 and the streaming rights to…

Amazon Prime Video New Releases: July 2020

As we get deeper into the summer, entertainment offerings are bound to start slimming – particularly in this pandemic era. Perhaps there’s no greater example of the oncoming drought than Amazon Prime’s list of new releases for July 2020. Though the new options may be few and far between on Amazon this month, at least they pack a bit of a punch. In the case of Hanna season 2, that punch is quite literal. Esme Creed-Miles returns as the titular precocious super soldier. You can check out our review here. Beyond that, there are two intriguing Amazon original movies. The…

Amazon Prime Video New Releases: June 2020

Amazon Prime’s new releases in June 2020 is fairly lacking in original material. That’s to be expected for a streaming service that focuses on quality over quantity to begin with now going through a pandemic content crunch. Standup special Gina Brillon: The Floor Is Lava, Joseph Gordon-Levitt film 7500, and Pete the Cat season 2 are the only originals arriving this month. And that’s fine as Amazon is about to be home to one of 2019’s most fun films. That’s right – Knives Out makes its debut on June 12. It might be awhile before we get to see the…

Knives Out Goes to Streaming on Amazon Prime in June

What we have here is a donut hole inside of another donut hole. And at the center of that donut is an excuse to watch Knives Out again—or for the first time if you were unfortunate enough to miss it in theaters. Indeed, Rian Johnson’s sleeper hit from 2019’s holiday season is about to make its debut on a non-VOD streaming service, with Knives Out slated to premiere on Amazon Prime on June 12. In what was for this writer’s money the most entertaining movie of 2019, Knives Out was Johnson’s loving throwback to the whodunit murder mysteries of Agatha…

Amazon Prime Video New Releases: May 2020

It’s been awhile since the world has seen a new comedy from Greg Daniels, co-creator of The Office (U.S.) and Parks and Recreation. That all changes this month with Amazon Prime’s new releases for May 2020. That’s right, leading the pack of Amazon originals on May 1 is Daniels’ Upload, a comedy about digital afterlives. That should inject a healthy dose of sci-fi “middletopia” into our lives. Also premiering in May is the second season of Amazon Prime’s twisty drama Homecoming. This season starts Janelle Monáe and premieres on May 22. After that, the rest of Amazon’s originals this month…

Best Family Movies on Amazon Prime

Amazon has thrown families a huge benefit during the coronavirus pandemic by making a lot of their children’s content (Amazon Originals and licensed shows) available for free, even for families that don’t have a Prime membership. Most of what’s there is series programming, which Amazon excels at offering. For families with Amazon Prime, however, there are definitely some family friendly movies to watch, although those are in shorter supply than the more extensive episodic programs. Many of the films that are available are classics parents will remember from their own childhoods, so if you’re trying to figure out what to…

SXSW Film Festival Moving to Amazon Prime

The cancellation of the SXSW in Austin, Texas last month—an intersection of festivals and conferences in film, music, and technology—was one of the first major social upheavals caused by the coronavirus pandemic in North America. It of course would not be the last. However, as prudent a decision as it was by the city of Austin to prevent 400,000 global revelers to descend upon their city, there is no denying the heartbreak of denying hundreds of independent filmmakers, many of them first-timers, their moment of triumph. That’s why it’s a ray of good news that SXSW and Amazon Prime Video…

There’s currently no word on whether or not Amazon UK will follow suit. The…
