What College Football’s Return to Gaming Means for NCAA and Madden Fans

During a week in which the entire football focus is squarely on the biggest game of the NFL season, EA Sports called a trick play few were expecting: the publisher is developing a new college football game for the first time since 2013. All of a sudden, buzz shifted from whether Tom Brady’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers will beat Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LV on Sunday — briefly, anyway — and squarely on the announced return of college football to gaming. Like Boise State’s epic Statue of Liberty play in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl, nobody…

Madden NFL 21 Sales Figures Seemingly Unaffected by Negative Reviews

The early sales figures for Madden NFL 21 are in, and they may come as something of a surprise to those who felt that this year’s installment represents the series at its absolute worst. While EA hasn’t revealed exactly how many copies of Madden NFL 21 have been sold thus far, a report by the NPD group makes it clear that the game is already a tremendous success. It’s not too surprising to learn that Madden NFL 21 was the best-selling game of August, but it is shocking to hear that this year’s installment reached “double-digit percentage dollar sales growth…

Colin Kaepernick Returns To Madden After 4-Year Absence

Colin Kaepernick is back. Not quite in the NFL, but the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback turned activist has returned to Madden for the first time in four years. Referring to Kaepernick as “one of the top free agents in football and a starting-caliber quarterback,” EA Sports announced his arrival in Madden NFL 21, the officially licensed NFL game, on social media. The quarterback’s 2016 decision to kneel during pregame performances of the national anthem, in protest of racial injustice in the United States, effectively blackballed him from the league.  According to The Undefeated, EA Sports attributes his absence from…

Madden NFL 21 User Score Controversy Explained

Recently, the legendary Madden NFL franchise garnered yet another historic accomplishment as Madden NFL 21 became one of the lowest-rated games in Metacritic history (based on user scores). While we understand that the Metacritic user score section is usually where you go to grind a controversial ax rather than seek out a nuanced perspective on new releases, that always lively corner of the internet isn’t the only place that fans are vocalizing their outrage. Not only are the critic reviews for Madden NFL 21 typically lower than average (our own review was arguably more inspired and passionate than the game…

Madden 21’s The Yard Isn’t NFL Blitz But It’s Still Important for Arcade Football

The Madden franchise and I go way back. I poured a lot of fifth-grade free time into Madden NFL 97 for the Super NES, and I can still hear that edition’s chiptune menu music in my head when I think about the series. But, I have to be honest. For all the Madden games I’ve owned over the years — give or take 15, by my count — I’d trade them all for a high-quality arcade-style football experience.  Quality is highly subjective when we’re talking about a video game. For you, quality arcade football might be EA Sports BIG’s NFL…

Madden NFL 21 Review

Anyone who’s purchased any of the latest in EA Sports’ Madden NFL franchise over the past 15 years has at least heard the yearly gripe from jaded fans: “You’re paying $60 for a roster update.” That’s not the case with Madden NFL 21. This time, you’re paying $60 for a roster update, a whole mess of ugly typos and hiccups, and some interesting new additions which fulfill their promise about as well as Johnny Manziel. Okay, maybe not quite as disappointing as Johnny Football. Regardless, this is the most underwhelming new installment of Madden since I began reviewing the franchise…
