Raiders of the Lost Ark and the Many Influences of Indiana Jones

When Raiders of the Lost Ark was released in 1981, it was like a jolt of lightning from out of the past. As with George Lucas’ Star Wars before it, here was a throwback to many of the cinematic touchstones high and low that Baby Boomers grew up with: Saturday morning serials, prestige Oscar winners from yesteryear, and even boys’ pulp magazines were sifted through, borrowed from, and recontextualized into one of the most thrilling action-adventure movies anyone had ever seen. Somehow Lucas, who was a producer on the project, director Steven Spielberg, and the whole Indiana Jones team were…

Indiana Jones 5 Update: Why Writer David Koepp Left the Movie

Indiana Jones 5 still seems to be part of Disney’s plans for the future, although as with everything else in this increasingly lost year of 2020, the pandemic has almost certainly slowed development on a project that was already crawling along for years. Of course, the big news revealed earlier this year — back in February, to be exact — was that Steven Spielberg was no longer going to direct the movie. James Mangold (Logan) was anointed his successor, making the fifth film in the series the first to be directed by someone other than The Beard (who is still…

Spielberg will instead remain on the project as a “hands-on” producer. This will be the first Indiana Jones movie not directed by Spielberg.  Mangold is an exciting new addition to the franchise, having already cut his teeth on big blockbuster franchises like…
