So it should hardly be a surprise that horror films are and have been a component of cinema in just about every country that embraced the art form. Along with love, fear is the most profound human emotion, and any art — especially filmmaking — is the way in which we…

Nicolas Cage Horror Film Color Out of Space to Stream on Shudder

Shudder, AMC Networks’ horror-genre streaming platform, continues to bolster its burgeoning lineup of original content; an endeavor that’s especially prudent as the theatrical distribution pipeline continues to be halted in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Relic: Horror Movie Offers Fresh Twist on Haunted House in New Trailer

In times such as these, it can already be unnerving to know we shouldn’t leave the house. Perhaps that’s why it’s the perfect (or scariest?) time for a movie where the horror is within the home. Indeed, the original subject du jour of campfire yarns everywhere—a haunted house ghost story—is getting an intriguing new entry via Natalie Erika James’ Relic. The film, which made waves in January at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, appears to be steeped in the Gothic tradition of journeying into the unknown and an undead past. That at least is what it might seem like to…

Horror Hit The Others In Line for a Remake

The Others, the 2001 period horror film starring Nicole Kidman, is going to be remade. According to Deadline, Los Angeles production company Sentient Entertainment has won the rights to mount a new version of the film, which will mark its 20th anniversary next year. The original, directed by Alejandro Amenabar (whose latest film, While at War, premiered at last year’s Toronto Film Festival), featured Kidman as Grace, a young mother who shelters herself and her two children at a remote, isolated mansion on the British island of Jersey during World War II. The children suffer from a rare disease that…

How Shudder’s Cursed Films Explores the Most Troubled Horror Movies Ever

Some movies are born bad. Poltergeist, The Omen, The Exorcist; these are iconic horror films with reputations of misfortune and mishap. Either due to a series of grim coincidences that form a pattern or one or two notable tragedies, a handful of films are said to have near-evil legacies. Maybe it really is as Shirley Jackson mused in The Haunting of Hill House? If some spots attach to themselves an atmosphere of goodness, “It might not then be too fanciful to say some houses are born bad.” So why not movies too? Within horror films, curses are caused by the…

Saint Maud Review: Elevated Horror That’s a Revelation

If God exists then so must The Devil in Rose Glass’ stunning debut Saint Maud which sees a pious young nurse who experiences beatific visions become obsessed with saving the soul of her dying patient Amanda (Jennifer Ehle). Saint Maud is a strange, gorgeous, and deeply disturbing chiller which mixes psychological, religious, and body horror to form something that feels utterly original. Very definitely a genre movie, this is “elevated” horror that messes with your perceptions of what’s real and what isn’t and comes with an ending that’s so simultaneously euphoric and horrific it feels like a punch in the heart.…

How Jason Blum Changed Horror Movies

“I look at myself more as an entrepreneur than a producer,” Jason Blum tells Den of Geek ahead of the release of his latest buzzy horror movie. Unless it's a story based on real events, that sort of commentary typically gets concealed within metaphors and symbolism, creating some breathing room between the enjoyment of the horror from the real-world details of what it sets out to critique, whether it's personal ailments like psychological disorders and sexually-transmitted infections or more social concerns like racism and xenophobia. The…
