Invincible: First Trailer Arrives for Superhero Animated Series

Robert Kirkman’s other monster creator-owned comic series, Invincible, is coming to streaming, and the show might be closer to arriving than we thought. They just dropped a trailer at New York Comic Con’s pandemic stand in, Metaverse. It looks surprisingly faithful to the book, and if Kirkman’s promise at the panel holds, we should be in for some intense superhero action. The trailer has about what you’d expect in it. Mark Grayson, played by The Walking Dead‘s Steven Yuen, is a fairly typical 17 year old, except for the fact that his father (JK Simmons) is the most powerful superhero…

PlayStation 5 Will Outsell PS4 In First Fiscal Year, Says Sony

In an interview with Naver (via Gamesindustry.biz), Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan seemingly made a bold prediction when he stated that Sony believes the PS5 will “sell more in its first fiscal year than [we] sold in the first fiscal year at the time of [the] PS4 launch.” It’s worth reiterating that Ryan’s quote does come via a translation. While the translation appears to be reliable, this would hardly be the first time that even a reliable translation misses some subtlety that changes the meaning of a statement. It’s also been mentioned that it’s possible that Ryan was talking…

Now, they’re fulfilling another stage of that promise: Hardware and Icon are being published digitally for the first time ever.  This week saw the release of Hardware: The Man in the Machine, the first volume of Dwayne McDuffie, Denys Cowan and J.J. Birch’s origin/revenge tale about genius inventor Curt Metcalf, on…

The Teleprompter Interview: Katy Wix ‘My First Screen Crush was King Kong’

“Anchors, rigging, shackles,” lists Katy Wix down the phone, “poop deck, wheelhouse, three sheets to the wind…” The comedian and writer has had a productive year. Filming wrapped on Ghosts series two just as UK lockdown began. Since then, she’s finished one book – Delicacy: A Memoir – due out next April, is pitching another, writing a TV show, and thanks to a new-found obsession with Netflix yacht-based reality show Below Deck, has also managed to acquire an enviable grasp of nautical terminology.  Wix is an established UK comic actor, with credits across the board, starting with cult hit Time Trumpet and going mainstream as witless,…

Sony Says Adding New First-Party Games to PlayStation Now Isn’t “Sustainable”

In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan noted that the PlayStation team does not currently intend to offer new game releases as a day one addition to their subscription services. “For us, having a catalogue of games is not something that defines a platform,” says Ryan. “Our pitch, as you’ve heard, is ‘new games, great games.’ We have had this conversation before — we are not going to go down the road of putting new releases titles into a subscription model. These games cost many millions of dollars, well over $100 million, to develop. We just…

Dennis ‘Des’ Nilsen is Far From David Tennant’s First Psychopath Role

David Tennant’s transformation into serial killer Dennis Nilsen for ITV’s Des was unsettlingly convincing. It wasn’t just the physical resemblance, though under that hairstyle and behind those 1980s glasses frames, the similarity was remarkable. It was also the posture, the unwavering eye contact, and the voice; mumbling and unconcerned, listing the terrible details of Nilsen’s crimes as if reciting a recipe instead of multiple brutal murders.  As Nilsen, Tennant pulled off what every actor hopes to in a real-life role – a disappearing trick. He slid clean inside the role, leaving no trace of The Doctor, or Simon from There She Goes, or the demon…

Like that guy who didn’t sign The Beatles and those publishers who turned down the first Harry Potter book, Channel 4 must have spent some portion of the last five years kicking itself. The Teleprompter Interview: Andy Nyman ‘The First Poster I Ever Had On My Wall Was Joanna Lumley’

“It’s a classic ghost story with one of the best filmed jumps ever,” sums up Andy Nyman of Herbert Wise’s 1989 TV movie of The Woman in Black, “It properly delivers, and it properly delivers in a fantastically old fashioned way. It’s a proper ghost story at Christmas.” He’s not wrong. Now restored and released on Blu-ray with a load of new extras, the movie is still incredibly effective. Nyman has recorded a new commentary for the film along with fellow horror experts Kim Newman and Mark Gatiss. Nyman has a personal connection to the film too – it was…

Raised By Wolves Debuts First Full Trailer

The first teaser for HBO Max’s Ridley Scott-directed sci-fi series Raised By Wolves was nothing if not enigmatic. The nearly two-minute first look revealed the stunning visuals of Scott and creator Aaron Guzikowski’s concept. There were cities on fire, androids blowing stuff up, and a parable of the Three Little Pigs. It was awesome. But was it awesome because it was so enigmatic? The teaser didn’t have to shoulder the burden of revealing the plot to viewers or giving a sense of how all these cool concepts and visuals would meld into a coherent series. Now a second trailer has…

The Crown Season 4: November Release Date and First Teaser

‘Something as important as the monarchy simply cannot be allowed to fail’ says Queen Elizabeth II in the first teaser for The Crown season four. Very good, ma’am. That must have been Netflix’s argument to series creator Peter Morgan when he shrunk plans for a total of six seasons down to five, before being persuaded to return to the original number. Something as important and investment-heavy as The Crown also simply cannot be allowed to fail. HRH’s words gain additional weight in the teaser from being delivered in voiceover as she rides out on horseback in full ceremonial garb, complete…

How The First X-Men Movie Changed The Superhero Genre

Back in the late 1990s, things didn’t look so hot for superhero movies. Warner Bros. Pictures crashed its Batman franchise into the ground with 1997’s disastrous Batman and Robin and showed no signs of resurrecting either that or any of its other DC comics heroes. Meanwhile, with the one bright exception of 1998’s Blade, not a single Marvel Comics character had made it to the big screen in a meaningful way. All that changed, however, in 2000, when 20th Century Fox released X-Men. Based on one of Marvel’s most enduring properties, the Bryan Singer-directed film introduced the concept of mutants…
