It’s been quite a while since Nintendo has hosted a substantial Direct presentation that focuses on trailers and news for the biggest upcoming Switch games. In fact, this February 17th showcase was the Nintendo Direct of its kind since September 2019. Of course, the long gap between such presentations is understandable given that the COVID-19 pandemic delayed production schedules across the industry and impacted everyone’s ability to share substantial updates about their upcoming releases. As a result, 2020 Nintendo Direct presentations were highlighted by a celebration of Super Mario‘s 35th anniversary, indie showcases, and various Super Smash Bros. updates. At…

To many fans, it seemed like this moment would never come, but it’s finally happening: a new Nintendo Direct is set to drop today at 5 pm ET. Nintendo has confirmed that the Direct will cover some new updates for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, which means you should probably expect to hear about a new fighter joining the fray. Beyond that, everything seems fair game, although the focus will…

“Witches, they’re real, and they hate children,” Chris Rock warns us in the first The Witches trailer. Yes, even with Everybody Hates Chris-style narration, Four Tops orchestration, and CGI animation, Roald Dahl’s message lives on. “It doesn’t matter who you are or what you look like, so long as somebody loves you.” You can rest assured that person will not be a witch. The children are entrapped in the bodies of mice, and the Warner Bros. feature adaptation of Dahl’s 1983 novel was supposed to be released in theaters. But it will hit HBO Max on Oct. 22. Just in…

Ben Affleck is returning to 1970s Hollywood for his next directorial effort. As the filmmaker who won a Best Picture Oscar for Argo in 2013, a movie that briefly crossed paths with Tinseltown at the height of Star Wars fever in the late ‘70s, Affleck already knows well the setting of The Big Goodbye, which is being developed at Paramount Pictures. And with the new movie focused on Paramount’s struggles in making the legendary Chinatown, this means Affleck is helming a movie where Jack Nicholson, Roman Polanski, and Faye Dunaway are all characters. Also set to write the screenplay, Affleck…

For the first time since 2010, it’s been over a year since the world has seen a Marvel Studios film. Still, even in the coronavirus pandemic-induced offseason, the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to make headlines. The second Captain Marvel film does not currently have a name but is being targeted for a July 8, 2022 release date. That could change should Disney need to adjust the MCU schedule further due to virus lockdowns. According to Deadline, Marvel cast a wide net for…

Sony’s seemingly interminable behind-the-scenes endeavor to expand its Spider-Man-centric (Marvel Cinematic Universe-adjacent) big screen arena has taken a major step with the hiring of a prolific voice in genre television, S.J. Clarkson. A secret Marvel movie is reportedly in focus over at Sony Pictures, and Variety reports that the studio has signed Clarkson—a veteran of genre television shows, notably Marvel’s Jessica Jones and The Defenders—to develop and direct. While specifics were not provided on the project, it is expected to manifest as the first female-centric movie in Sony’s Marvel Cinematic Spider-Verse. Additionally, in a claim one might be inclined to…

The backlog of Toy Story 4 director Josh Cooley continues to grow off momentum from the critical and financial success of the Pixar fourquel, which recently yielded him an Oscar win for Best Animated Feature Film. Indeed, just a few weeks after becoming attached to a major theatrically-aimed Transformers animated prequel movie, Cooley is now set to direct his very first live-action project. Sony Pictures has tapped Cooley to direct live-action fantasy film Malamander, reports THR. The project will serve as a film adaptation of author Thomas Taylor’s recent hit children’s fantasy novel, fully titled Malamander (The Legends of Eerie-on-Sea…
