Upcoming Movies in December 2020: Streaming, VOD, and Theaters

As we recover from whatever Thanksgiving celebration we were able to safely put together in these strange times, there is something reassuring about the fact that December is here and 2020–a challenging year on every level–is almost over. While December is normally packed with theatrical releases that range from buzzy awards contenders to end-of-the-year blockbusters and holiday-themed comfort films, this year is not business as usual. Sure, Oscar hopefuls abound, such as Mank, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, and Nomadland, but two of those three will be on Netflix. As for the tentpole contingent, well, only Wonder Woman 1984 is still…

Now HBO Max is the lucky winner of the saga, as it gets to premiere the long-awaited sequel on its servers on Dec. 25. While…

As the year winds down, streaming services appear to be taking a step back, licking their wounds from this strange pandemic production season, and looking to a hopefully brighter future. This is all to say that Hulu‘s list of new releases for December 2020 isn’t quite its most inspiring batch yet…and that’s OK. Hulu’s biggest original title this month is undoubtedly The Hardy Boys. New on Netflix UK December 2020

It has begun. New on Disney+ UK December 2020

Pennyworth Season 2 is coming soon to Epix, continuing to fulfill the show’s touted remit as a prequel to the Batman mythos, notably with Alfred’s eventual arrival in Gotham City. Having debuted on July 28, 2019, Pennyworth is the product of creator/executive producer/writer Bruno Heller (The Mentalist, Rome) and executive producer/director Danny Cannon (CSI franchise), and served as a quick reunion of key personnel from another Batman prequel series, Fox’s Gotham, which had just ended its five-season run that April. However, any associations end there, since Pennyworth is set in London in the 1960s, therefore—after doing some quick math—eliminating the…

Wonder Woman 1984 Delayed to December, Possibly Moving Dune

It appears Warner Bros. is not satisfied with the Labor Day weekend rollout of Tenet. That at least should be one takeaway from the news that Wonder Woman 1984 has been delayed from its Oct. 2 perch all the way to December, which would also displace Warner Brothers’ Dune remake as well. The news came Friday afternoon out of The Wall Street Journal, which reported WB is delaying the superhero sequel because Hollywood studios “worry U.S. moviegoers are hesitant to return to theaters in sufficient numbers to justify a second major release in the span of a month.” The delay…
