Legends of Tomorrow Tackles JFK and the Cuban Missile Crisis in Ridiculous Fashion

This article contains Legends of Tomorrow spoilers. Legends of Tomorrow Season 6 Episode 4 “Bay of Squids” is a perfect illustration of the line DC’s Legends of Tomorrow walks with every episode. It is very, very stupid, but it’s not even the first time this month that a Legends episode was dumb, and last week was one of the best episodes of the show ever. But in order for it to get away with being this dumb, everything about it has to hit just right. Half of “Bay of Squids” does it perfectly. The other half is a Foo Fighters…

Star Trek: Lower Decks Episode 9 Review: Crisis Point

This Star Trek: Lower Decks review contains spoilers. Star Trek: Lower Decks Episode 9 If you had to pick one Star Trek thing to represent the entire franchise and put that piece of media on a Golden Record, would you select an excellent Trek movie or a fantastic Trek episode? This division is at the heart of “Crisis Point,” a brazen episode of Lower Decks that brings a fresh perspective to the basic differences between Trek movies and Trek episodes.  And though this episode is startlingly on-the-nose, it paradoxically makes an argument that maybe, the very best of Trek can…

AMC Theatres Credit Rating Downgraded Amid Coronavirus Crisis

In what is most unwelcome news for folks who love going to the movies, the biggest movie theater chain in North America, AMC Theatres, has been given a bad credit rating and forecast by S&P Global. In lieu of the continuing coronavirus pandemic, which appears to be only accelerating in North America and most of Europe, the financial corporation has reevaluated its credit score for AMC Entertainment, downgrading it from a B to a CCC-. This moves the company’s prospects from “highly speculative” to “default imminent, with little prospect for recovery.” AMC Theatres, which was among the first national movie…

There is a light at the end of the COVID-19 tunnel, and it may shine on big screens. The People’s Republic of China closed its theaters nationwide on Jan. 23. The state-owned China Film Group, which oversees theaters, schedules film openings and produces movies, may reopen its Beijing offices as early as next week. The plan should see the country’s theaters begin opening doors by mid-to-late April. “Our cinema is preparing to…

Contagion: A Warning About Lies in a Crisis

I refuse to eat peanuts at a bar. It’s nothing personal against them, as they can make for an excellent snack, but like cashews, pretzels, chips, or any other miscellaneous “open” food, it remains open to anyone. And I saw a scene begin like this in Contagion nine years ago. Actually it’s the first scene of the movie when Gwyneth Paltrow’s Beth Emhoff sits at an airport bar, sweating profusely. As she absently speaks on the phone with an illicit lover, director Steven Soderbergh’s camera is far less interested in her conversation than where her hands are going: on the…
