The Suicide Squad: James Gunn Talks the Creative Freedom of That R-Rating

A couple of days. That’s how long director James Gunn had to wait before Warner Bros. and DC came calling in 2018. Up until that moment, it’d been a pretty turbulent July. The iconoclastic filmmaker who made audiences cry over a talking tree in Guardians of the Galaxy was just fired by Disney—temporarily as it turns out—and his name was being besmirched on social media. Yet less than 72 hours after that dismissal, WB was making him an offer that could change the face of DC superhero movies forever. “It happened immediately,” Gunn says with a hint of lingering chagrin.…

How Dickinson’s Story of Creative Isolation Hits Different During Quarantine

Like many TV shows released in the past year, Dickinson Season 2 was written and filmed before the world took a hard left, abruptly and wholly changing our global status quo. In that way, Dickinson, which tells a complex, often joyous story about one of America’s most famous homebodies, is an unexpectedly relevant parallel. “If people haven’t felt or didn’t feel like they could relate to Emily in Season 1, maybe they can now after having lived a very similar lifestyle to her in isolation,” says star Hailee Steinfeld, who plays young, passionate poet Emily Dickinson. “This is a show…

WandaVision Sent its Creative Team to “Sitcom School”

While previous trailers for Disney+’s first Marvel series, WandaVision, have been expectedly cryptic, they have also made one thing very clear: this won’t be your typical Marvel outing.  All first looks at the show have revealed that much of it will be paying homage to classic sitcoms like The Dick Van Dyke Show, Roseanne, and more. Now the show’s unusual approach has been confirmed in a sprawling EW feature.
