Link Tank: How Microsoft Tackled Backward Compatibility With the Xbox Series X

Xbox exec Jason Ronald spoke on how Microsoft finally addressed head-on the issue of backward compatibility in gaming. “Game preservation and backward compatibility have been foundational pillars of Xbox’s next-gen plans since the project began more than five years ago. It’s a refreshing, consumer-friendly approach in an industry that traditionally hasn’t batted an eye at the prospect of making players buy multiple copies of the same title — or flat-out abandoning classic games in an attempt to further the adoption of new hardware.” Read more at Inverse. PlayStation 5 Backward Compatibility Will Not Support P.T.

Despite previous reports to the contrary, Konami has confirmed that you will not be able to play P.T. on the PlayStation 5. In a statement to GamesRadar, Konami stated that P.T. will not be accessible on PS5 as “the content will not be available on the PS Store, so users won’t be able to re-download the content through the backwards compatibility feature to the PS5.” Eurogamer and other outlets previously speculated (we would go so far as to say “rightfully speculated”) that the ability to transfer PS4 game downloads to PS5 via the next-gen console’s backward compatibility program would likely mean…

A post on the Ubisoft website (as spotted by Twitter user Nibel) suggests that the PS5 will only be directly backward compatible with PlayStation 4 games and won’t natively support games from other PlayStation generations. “As part of their next-gen UPGRADE PROCESS, PlayStation offer a number of features designed to help you move from PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 5,” says Ubisoft in response to a question about upgrading games from PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 5 “Backwards compatibility will be available for supported PlayStation 4 titles, but will not be possible for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, or PlayStation games.” Ubisoft does…
