Artemis Fowl Review: Kenneth Branagh Brings Teen Criminal Mastermind to Disney+

Originally destined to be a tentpole theatrical release in May, Kenneth Branagh’s adaptation of the much loved Eoin Colfer books instead premieres as a Disney+ exclusive. It’s a shame in a way, since Branagh’s movie is colorful, kinetic, and highly cinematic with several rollicking set pieces and some Harry Potter-level world building.  On the other hand, the streaming release does at least save fans of the books feeling cheated out of the price of a cinema ticket and a bucket of popcorn as well as a morally ambiguous and frequently ruthless main character. But with the COVID-19 pandemic continuing to impact movie theaters, Disney has decided to premiere the film on their Disney+ streaming service. Earlier this month, Disney made the official announcement that Artemis Fowl, the feature film adaptation of Eoin Colfer’s bestselling middle grade novel, would be debuting on Disney+ rather than in theaters. Artemis Fowl Movie to Debut on Disney+

Artemis Fowl is the latest Hollywood film to have its planned rollout changed in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Disney announced today that the adaptation based on the bestselling Eoin Colfer kids fantasy series would be happening not in cinemas, as planned, but on Disney+. The film was set to be released in theaters on May 29th. As of this writing, there was no date for the Disney+ release, but I would imagine it will be sooner rather than later.
