To the surprise of nobody, The Purge will return for a fifth installment.
The film, officially titled The Forever Purge, will reunite many of The Purge‘s principal behind the scenes players. That includes the key producers of Blumhouse Productions as well as franchise creator James DeMonaco. Unfortunately, no further details have been given at this time regarding the film’s plot or setting.
Ironically enough, The Forever Purge was temporarily the victim of another kind of purge, this one caused by studio delays amidst the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, which resulted in the film being shelved indefinitely back in May. However, a lot has changed since then, and the fifth film in the franchise now has a release date… just one that’s a full year after its previous July 2020 window.
The Purge 5 Release Date
The Forever Purge is now scheduled to hit theaters on July 9, 2021.
The Purge 5 Details
There are no guarantees at this point regarding the plot details of The Forever Purge. The first three Purge films (The Purge, The Purge: Anarchy, and The Purge: Election Year), followed a fairly traditional chronological order in which one film followed the other. However, 2018’s The First Purge saw the series take a trip back in time as we got a look at the events of the first purge that kicked this timeline off.
There’s also the matter of The Purge TV series which followed the actions of a group of people as they attempt to survive the Purge itself. That show was ignominiously canceled this past May after two seasons, so there’s no reason to believe that this upcoming film will cover the characters and events of that series.
No matter the setting, and TV series cancelation notwithstanding, The Purge franchise has performed remarkably well. The first movie in the series earned an impressive $89 million off of a meager $3 million budget. The budget has risen for subsequent movies in the franchise, but so have the returns. The First Purge took in an impressive $137 million off of a still modest $13 million budget. While the full ratings aren’t available for every episode of the TV series, it’s believed that it drew in quite a few viewers over its initial 10 episode run.
The smart money would be on this upcoming movie either serving as a spin-off, continuing the events of the third Purge film, or perhaps even taking place sometime between the events of The First Purge and the first Purge film. Wow, this timeline really is becoming busy…
