The Outer Worlds‘ story continues in Obsidian’s recently revealed Peril on Gorgon DLC.
“What we wanted to do with the DLC was dig into some of the lore from the main campaign,” says game director Carrie Patel in an interview with GamesRadar. “There are a few details that come up in the base game and specifically there’s a drug called Adrena-Time. And so we saw the DLC as an opportunity to dig into Halcyon’s underlying problems. We know it’s a strange place run by the corporations. But how did some of the very specific problems that plagued this colony come to be?”
While Patel stops short of expanding on what that last part means, she does verify that that DLC picks up after players have “finished the critical path on Monarch.” The DLC will also take place on an asteroid which Obsidian says will be quite large.
“It’s a pretty large area for the player to explore,” Patel says. “You can explore every nook and cranny of this place. But in addition to that, we’re also allowing the player to return to some of their favourite locations from the base game, with new sub-levels in those locations. So by introducing those, the player is able to sort of retread somewhat familiar territory while still getting to explore new levels and new stories within those places.”
Interestingly, it also sounds like the DLC will feature the same style of decision making featured in the original Outer Worlds, but the scope of the decision may be limited somewhat to the context of the DLC. In other words, it doesn’t seem like most of the choices you make in this DLC will necessarily impact the narrative that your choices helped construct in the main game. While it doesn’t sound like that’s a hard and fast rule, that does seem to be one of the ways that Obsidian will try to control the scope of this epic.
Gameplay-wise, Peril on Gorgon will raise the level cap from 30 to 33 and offer players a variety of new perks to choose from. You’ll also be able to acquire new weapons and equipment that you’ll use to battle a new array of enemies. You can catch a glimpse of some of that new content in this reveal trailer:
We loved The Outer Worlds, and are interested to see what the Obsidian team dreams up for this DLC given their history of excellence in this arena. While Obsidian says that even more DLC is on the way, Peril on Gorgon is expected to be released on September 9 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. It will be released for next-gen consoles and Nintendo Switch at later dates.
