The Goonies, a movie that introduced us to Sloth, Chunk, the Truffle Shuffle and the first documented instance of Joey Pants’ surprising toupee reveals, will celebrate its 35th anniversary this year. A project surely blessed by the dream team of Richard Donner, Steven Spielberg and Chris Columbus in the mid-80s, The Goonies has lost none of its charm in the decades since its release.
Despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, industry vets are still finding a way to reach audiences under social distancing and lockdown measures, and The Goonies will definitely have an outlet to begin it’s 35th birthday early, thanks to Beauty and the Beast and Avenue 5 star Josh Gad, who is bringing the main cast of the film back together for a reunion special.
Sean Astin, who played Mikey in Donner’s 1985 kids classic, popped up in a new video Gad posted across social media this week, with an aim to get the old gang back together.

Cast members Josh Brolin (Brand), Kerri Green (Andy), Corey Feldman (Mouth), Ke Huy Quan (Data), Martha Plimpton (Stef) and Jeff Cohen (Chunk) will all appear in Gad’s Goonies reunion. Arguably, Brolin is now the most famous of the lot, but he’s also highly prolific on social media, and can often be found making light of his career and past choices over on Instagram.
The Goonies‘ plot offers us a timeless tale of history under threat when the “Goon Docks” neighborhood of Astoria is about to be foreclosed upon by greedy businessmen. Astin’s Mikey Walsh manages to convince a band of kids from the area to step up and prevent the foreclosure by hunting a mythical treasure he finds noted on a map, which seems to point to the burial place of legendary pirate One-Eyed Willy and his ship. The Goonies itself will likely never share the same fate as the Goon Docks might have – in 2017, it was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress.
Though remakes, reboots and sequels have been in abundance over the last couple of decades, The Goonies has somehow always eluded that fate, but not through lack of trying. Corey Feldman told US magazine (via CinemaBlend) that he and Astin had pitched The Goonies 2 some time ago to the original film-making trio, but they were told that it would require a bigger budget than they could net.
“Sean Astin and I actually wrote a pitch, a treatment of about 10 pages that we took into [director] Richard Donner and a representative of [screenwriter] Chris Columbus and Steven [Spielberg],” Feldman confirmed. “We pitched it and Donner loved it, but he said it was too expensive an idea.”
You can join Gad and the cast of The Goonies on his YouTube channel at 9am PT/12pm ET on April 27.
