The Expanse Season 5 Release Date, Trailer, and Story

Those waiting for The Expanse season 5 to return on Amazon’s Prime Video service won’t have long to wait as the network has announced the premiere date and released the trailer as part of a panel at New York Comic-Con’s Metaverse virtual convention. Dominique Tipper, who plays Naomi Nagata on the show, moderated the session, which also shared some details about the stories from which the adaptation of the James S.A. Corey novels will pull its inspiration.

Here’s what we know about The Expanse season 5 so far.

The Expanse Season 5 Release Date

Amazon Prime Video will drop the first three episodes of The Expanse Season 5 on Wednesday, December 16, 2020, and the rest of the season will be released one installment at a time each Wednesday leading up to the finale on February 3, 2021. The ten-episode Amazon Original series will be available in more than 240 territories around the world and is produced by Alcon Television Group.

The Expanse Season 5 Trailer

The first trailer for The Expanse season 5 shows a power shift in the solar system now that the gates are open to colonization from all factions. Fans will also notice that many of the principal characters are off on their own missions this year.

As the title sequence puts it: “This year, the battle for humanity will hold a world captive.” That can refer as much to the devoted audience of The Expanse as it does to the terrorist plot of season 5.

The Expanse Season 5 Story

Following closely with the progression of The Expanse novels by James S.A. Corey, season 5 will explore the backstory-heavy events of Book 5 in the series, Nemesis Games. Here’s the official synopsis:

“Season five of the series picks up as multitudes of humans leave the solar system in search of new homes and vast fortunes on the earth-like worlds beyond the alien Ring, and a heavy price for centuries of exploitation of the Belt finally comes due and a reckoning is at hand. For the crew of the Rocinante and the leaders of the Inner Planets and the Belt, the past and present converge, bringing forth personal challenges that have wide-reaching repercussions throughout the Solar System.”

The press release goes on to elaborate on some of the personal journeys in store for some of the main characters in The Expanse season 5. Amos finds cause to return to his impoverished roots in the slums of Baltimore “to confront his past and the legacy of the life he fought to leave behind.” As noted in the season 4 finale, Naomi’s past relationships within more extreme Belter factions come to bear as she “reaches out to her estranged son in a desperate bid to save him from his father’s toxic influence.“

The character of Drummer has taken on a life of her own apart from the novels, and in The Expanse season 5, she has a new crew, fighting “to escape who and what she used to be.” Meanwhile, Amos and Bobbie have business on a quickly destabilizing Mars, chasing down “a shadowy cabal with ties to terrorists and criminals,” and Avasarala similarly “fights to prevent a terrorist attack unrivaled in history” on Earth.

Don’t worry, though, it’s not all planetary politics; The Expanse season 5 isn’t quite done with the protomolecule yet. Holden will continue to wrestle “with the consequences of his own past with the protomolecule, the aliens who built it, and the mystery of what killed them.”

More news will be forthcoming about The Expanse season 5 as it’s announced, and we’ll be reviewing the show as we’ve done since its premiere.
