Save Yourselves is an alien science fiction movie based on a simple premise that turns out to be so much more.
“Though it starts with a seemingly simple sci-fi premise, Save Yourselves is actually so much more. This is a film that’s funny and surprising but also smart, layered, and subtly thought-provoking. It doesn’t clobber you over the head with any single message; instead, you’re presented with many different viewpoints, any of which can be processed however you choose. The story is cute and clever but having something to think about afterward makes it even better.”
From Daphne du Maurier to Mariko Koike, these are the women horror writers to check out in October.
“In 1818, Mary Shelley published Frankenstein, a novel so gripping it would continue to scare readers and shape genre literature for the next 200 years. But if Shelley is the godmother of modern horror, who are her goddaughters? Women have written some of the most blood-curdlingly scary stories of all time, but they haven’t always gotten the credit they deserve.”
Robert Downey Jr. reportedly wants Sherlock Holmes to be his next big franchise, but there’s a question of where the film universe could go.
“The Guy Ritchie Sherlock Holmes movies starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law delighted me to no end in 2009 and 2011. I thought the films were a wonderfully fun look at literary characters that I loved, and I wanted many more of them. Instead, the Marvel Cinematic Universe took over the known world, and nine years later, I’m still waiting for Sherlock Holmes 3.”
DC Universe’s Swamp Thing has broadcast premiered on The CW. Here’s why the show is worth a watch.
“Resurrection is par for the course for many of the world’s comic book heroes, but it’s not every day that we hear of a TV show getting the same second chance. Swamp Thing, one of DC Universe’s first original titles, was the streaming service’s buzziest and most expensive project, which, depending on who you ask, seemed to have doomed it from the start.”
A new malware reportedly thought to originate from Chinese hackers can survive operating system reinstallations.
“Chinese hackers may be using malware that can survive Windows OS reinstalls to spy on computers. Security firm Kaspersky Lab uncovered the malware, which exploits a computer’s UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) to continually persist on a Windows machine.”
