Justice League: The Snyder Cut Reveals New Steppenwolf Design

Even the most hardcore DCEU fan is likely to admit that Justice League movie villain Steppenwolf was something of a disappointment. Despite having the pedigree of being created by the legendary Jack Kirby, the big screen Steppenwolf resembled a washed out video game boss, stripped of any/all notable motivation in favor of his quest to collect Mother Boxes and…um…make bad things happen on Earth.

Of course, it’s entirely possible that Steppenwolf was a victim of the troubled production of Justice League, which saw director Zack Snyder leave the project after a personal tragedy, and replaced by Joss Whedon, who stewarded massive reshoots of the project as Warner Bros. worked their way through the backlash against Snyder’s previous DCEU effort Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Perhaps there was a more layered, interesting villain awaiting fans in Snyder’s original vision for Steppenwolf.

Audiences will finally get to see what Snyder had planned for Steppenwolf when HBO Max releases the mythical Snyder Cut of Justice League, which may or may not be officially known as Zack Snyder’s Justice League, in 2021. For a quick comparison, here’s what Steppenwolf looked like in the theatrical cut of Justice League

That’s one of the better images of Steppenwolf from the theatrical version, and there’s not a lot there (other than Steppenwolf’s very cool, Kirby-esque double axe blade). But it seems like we’ll get something a little better for the Snyder Cut.

The director has long been an expert at teasing fans with his original vision for the film, and he has continued to do that since the announcement of the Snyder Cut, beginning with footage of Henry Cavill’s Superman wearing a black and silver costume a few weeks back, and continuing now with a new look at Steppenwolf, revealed on his Vero account. You can definitely see the difference, with a more menacing, goat-like body to go along with his horned headgear, and much more.

“Just working today pulled this out of the editorial sorry he’s Low resolution but I’ve seen him in all his hi-Rez glory and he’s a thing to behold,” Snyder wrote. “quick question…how many f@*ks do you think he gives?”

That’s an excellent question. What do you think, readers? How many “f@*ks” do you think Zack Snyder’s Steppenwolf gives. Let us know in the comments!
