Jurassic World: Dominion is the title of the 2021-scheduled third film in the revived blockbuster Jurassic Park franchise, intended as the conclusion to a trilogy consisting of 2015’s Jurassic World and 2018’s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. The sequel swan song will showcase a shaken status quo after Fallen Kingdom‘s plot twist, in which the cloned dinosaurs were unleashed upon civilization, altering the existential balance of mankind (and the rest of the animal kingdom).
Seemingly mirroring Disney’s revived Star Wars Sequel Trilogy films, the Jurassic Sequel Trilogy will close things out with the director who helped foster the relaunch, Colin Trevorrow (who ended up the odd man out for the former’s closing film, The Rise of Skywalker, in lieu of J.J. Abrams). He will work off a script that he helped develop with Derek Connolly, co-written by Emily Carmichael.
Dominion will, poetically enough, be a franchise-encompassing reunion with current stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard set to be joined by returning Jurassic Park stars Sam Neill, Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum, seemingly showcasing a climax to the cloned dinosaur cinematic mythology – at least until a studio suit gets the bright idea for another reboot.
Jurassic World 3 News
While production on Jurassic World: Dominion, is of course, halted in the wake of coronavirus concerns, director Colin Trevorrow just revealed a crucial locale for the film. In an inspirational tweet designed to salute professionals who are unable to exercise their trades, Trevorrow included a photo from his halted production, which—in a franchise first—is set in a snowy locale. Indeed, with the continuity altered by the global unleashing of the cloned dinosaurs, it makes sense that the formerly tropical-island-isolated franchise is bringing the action to new climates.
On another note, the face you see on the monitor is child actress Isabella Sermon, who reprises her role from Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom as Maisie Lockwood, who, as revealed in that film, is a clone of the deceased daughter of Benjamin Lockwood (James Cromwell), John Hammond’s former partner, whose dinosaur relocation endeavor went horribly wrong.
Jurassic World 3 Cast
DeWanda Wise has landed an unspecified lead role for Jurassic World: Dominion, reported Variety. Wise is coming off a breakthrough starring run on the Netflix Spike Lee adaptation, She’s Gotta Have It, which was recently cancelled after two seasons. In addition to 2019 films Someone Great and The Weekend, she recently fielded an appearance on Jordan Peele’s CBS All Access reboot of The Twilight Zone, along with runs on Fox’s Shots Fired and WGN America’s Underground.
Mamoudou Athie will also field an unspecified lead role, as reported by Deadline. Athie can be seen opposite Elizabeth Olsen and Kelly Marie Tran on the Facebook Watch TV drama, Sorry for Your Loss. He’s been seen in films such as the recent Kristen Stewart-headlined sci-fi/horror offering, Underwater, Hugh Jackman-headlined Gary Hart biopic The Front Runner, Brie Larson-starring drama Unicorn Store and Emma Watson/Tom Hanks thriller The Circle, along with TV runs on TBS sitcom The Detour (which happened to feature Fallen Kingdom’s Daniella Pineda,) and Netflix drama The Get Down (which happened to feature Fallen Kingdom‘s Justice Smith).
Newcomers Athie and Wise will be joined by returning Jurassic World characters Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) and Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard). Additionally, Fallen Kingdom characters such as Maisie Lockwood (Isabella Sermon), Zia Rodriguez (Daniella Pineda) and Franklin Webb (Justice Smith) will also make their returns.
Of course, we’ll get to see a long-awaited onscreen reunion of Jurassic Park Trilogy alumni in Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neill), Dr. Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern) and Dr. Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum).
Neill’s Grant was the main character of 1993’s original Jurassic Park and 2001’s Jurassic Park III, and Dern’s Sattler (the eventually estranged love interest of Grant,) was a main player in 1993’s original as well, and fielded a brief role in the 2001 threequel. Also one of the original movie’s main trio, Goldblum’s Ian Malcolm would serve as the protagonist for 1997’s The Lost World: Jurassic Park (the only sequel that original helmer Steven Spielberg directed,) and had a cameo in 2018’s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.
Jurassic World 3 Release Date
Jurassic World: Dominion is set to arrive on June 11, 2021.
That’s still the planned release date in the post-COVID-19 era, but, of course, that can easily change.
Jurassic World 3 Details
The film now known as Jurassic World: Dominion was planned to start production in February at London’s Pinewood Studios, according to Forbes. While the cameras did, indeed, start rolling, it obviously didn’t get to do so for long, due the COVID-19 outbreak.
Colin Trevorrow returns to direct Jurassic World 3 after his long-procured spot as director of Star Wars: Episode IX (now known as Star Wars: The Return of Skywalker,) was unceremoniously yanked by Disney, who instead sought the return of The Force Awakens’s J.J. Abrams. He steps in after J.A. Bayona (A Monster Calls) occupied the director’s chair for 2018 middle act movie Fallen Kingdom. Trevorrow also co-wrote the threequel script.
Interestingly, Trevorrow has already managed to whet audience appetites for Jurassic World 3 by shooting in secret an official Jurassic Universe-set short film, titled “Battle at Big Rock,” which can be viewable online.
Emily Carmichael, a surging screenwriter, co-wrote the script for Jurassic World 3 (as well as short “Battle at Big Rock”), having worked on the screenplay for the 2018 kaiju-killing franchise sequel, Pacific Rim Uprising. Carmichael also rewrote the screenplay to the developing Disney sci-fi reboot film, The Black Hole, which will be directed by Joseph Kosinski of Oblivion and TRON: Legacy fame. As Trevorrow expressed in a 2018 statement on the acquisition of Carmichael:
“It’s important to this franchise that we welcome new creative voices to keep our storytelling fresh and alive. I’m thrilled with the tension and beauty J.A. has brought to Fallen Kingdom, and I know Emily will add another layer of emotion to the concluding chapter of our trilogy.”
Trevorrow also serves as an executive producer alongside Steven Spielberg, joined by producers Frank Marshall and Pat Crowley.
