Greenland Trailer: It’s Gerard Butler vs a Comet

Are you reading this part? In all fairness, you probably don’t need to: there’s a disaster film called Greenland coming out. It stars Gerard Butler. It’s been ushered on to the screen by Angel Has Fallen director Ric Roman Waugh, and in it, a massive comet has hit the Earth’s atmosphere, leading to “an extinction level event.” It was due out on June 12, but given the current situation, it’ll either be pushed back or go straight to streaming. That’s enough info, right?

WRONG. Because you’re at Den of Geek, so here comes the trivia, baby! Hey, is it …is it too soon for us to be calling each other ‘baby’? It just feels right, idk, we’ve been watching these Gerard Butler movies together for so long. What are we?

Ahem, yes. Back in 2018, this film was originally a Neill Blomkamp joint, and former Captain America Chris Evans was supposed to star in the Butler role. By February 2019, however, Blomkamp was no longer attached, and neither was Evans. ‘Scheduling conflicts’ and whatnot; the usual. Please feel free to keep this in mind when watching the first trailer for Greenland below, if you’re ready to be bemused by the odd vibe of ‘what could’ve been’.

In Greenland‘s first trailer, there are lots of fairly respectably visual effects, bits of comet falling from the sky, explosions, mass panic, Gerard saying “I swear …I’ll get my family …into that bunker.” Yes, the Greenland trailer has everything you’re looking for and more, if the perpetual horror of our current existence isn’t enough to keep you on edge.

Clap your eyes on it below…

Director Waugh says that the movie appealed to him because it took the same approach as he and Butler’s previous film, Angel Has Fallen, in a very specific way:

“If Angel Has Fallen is the inside out version of an action movie, where you feel like you’re within the action and the spectacle, Greenland does the same thing of movies like A Quiet Place or World War Z or War of the Worlds,” he explained. “But it’s told from the inside out, where you’re with a family that is in the middle of this whole harrowing journey.”

Morena Baccarin (Deadpool, Firefly), Scott Glenn (Silence of the Lambs, Castle Rock), Andrew Bachelor (The Babysitter), and David Denman (Brightburn) also star in Greenland, which is very unlikely to make its summer release date, as things stand.
