Sometimes Emmy Award ceremonies can blend together. How can one differentiate among all the years Bryan Cranston or Modern Family won gold? Well there’s little risk in the Emmy Awards of 2020 blending together with all the others.
It’s not because some familiar shows won’t win (Succession, Ozark, and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel all seem primed for repeats). It’s because the format will be remarkably different. Like just about everything else right now, the 2020 Emmy Awards on September 20, 2020 are going virtual. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, large gatherings are banned in many places around the world, and frowned upon just about everywhere. So the 2020 Emmys will gather online.
Jimmy Kimmel will host the virtual ceremony come September. Whether the online event will find a way to incorporate a red carpet bonanza is anyone’s guess at the moment. What we do know, however, is that there are some exciting new shows competing in this year’s event. Leslie Jones, Laverne Cox, Josh Gad, and Tatiana Maslany announced the 2020 Emmy Award nominees on July 28.
