In the new pandemic era of streaming entertainment, Disney+ has seemingly built up its own strategy. Every summer month has thus far been highlighted by one major movie (Artemis Fowl, Hamilton) and then complemented with the typical Disney content.
For August 2020, the big original movie of the hour is Phineas and Ferb the Movie: Candace Against the Universe. This will be the second Phineas and Ferb movie and the first to make its premiere via streaming. The film premieres on August 28 and finds the Phineas and Ferb gang back together again as they set out across the galaxy to rescue Candace.
Two other Disney+ originals of note this month are Howard (Aug. 7)and The One and Only Ivan (Aug. 14). Howard is a documentary about Howard Ashman, the unheralded lyricist behind Disney classics like Aladdin and The Little Mermaid. The One and Only Ivan is a film based on the book of the same name about a very nice gorilla.
Notable library titles this month include two Marvel properties with X-Men (Aug. 7) and Ant-Man and the Wasp (Aug. 14). Those two films don’t technically occupy the same cinematic universe but they do share a parent company now and co-exist peacefully on Disney+.
