Control Developer Remedy Working on New “Connected Universe” Game

In a recent blog post, Remedy hinted that their next project could help further the idea of a shared universe in their video games.

“For over 10 years, we’ve had a crazy dream,” says Sam Lake, Remedy’s creative director. “The idea that the tales told in some of our games would be connected to each other, a connected world of stories and events with shared characters and lore. Each game is a stand-alone experience, but each game is also a doorway into a larger universe with exciting opportunities for crossover events.”

Obviously, that statement could be interpreted as a bit of promotion for Control‘s upcoming AWE expansion which features Alan Wake. However, Lake goes on to suggest that expansion is really just the beginning of the studio’s more ambitious plans.

“What took place in 2010 in Alan Wake is one of the cases that the Federal Bureau of Control has been investigating,” Lake says. “The AWE expansion is the first official Remedy Connected Universe crossover event, bringing more Alan Wake lore into Control. And this is still just a humble beginning. We’re already hard at work on a future Remedy game that also takes place in this same universe.”

Sadly, Lake does not expand on Remedy’s plans for that briefly referenced future game. For what it’s worth, though, this isn’t the first time that we’ve heard Remedy talk about their upcoming games. Earlier this year, they mentioned that they were working on three projects. The first two were previously known about, but the third was described as being based on one of Remedy’s “own brands.”

While it’s possible they were referring to the AWE expansion, Remedy referred to that expansion in separate promotional material, which would tend to suggest that the game they describe as being part of their own brand could be something else.

If that is the case, then the term “own brand” is interesting in relation to this recent news. While we initially suspected that it meant that Remedy would be working on with one of their existing properties, it now seems that they may have been talking about an IP that will share a universe with Control and Alan Wake.

This is certainly an interesting development. Remedy is one of the most creative game studios in the industry today, and the nature of Control certainly seems to open the doors for all kinds of inter-dimensional shenanigans. We look forward to getting a better idea regarding the nature of those shenanigans when Control‘s AWE expansion is released on August 27.
